Stella Walsh, who was born in Poland but raised in the United States, competed for Poland at the 1932 and 1936 Olympics, winning gold and silver in the 100 meters. Running and jumping competitively for three decades, Walsh also won more than 40 U.S. national championships and set dozens of world records. In 1975, she was inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame, yet Stella Walsh鈥檚 impressive accomplishments have been almost entirely ignored. A pioneer in women鈥檚 sports, Walsh was one of the first globetrotting athletes, running in meets all over North America, Europe, and Asia. While her accomplishments are undeniable, Walsh鈥檚 legacy was called into question after her murder in 1980. Walsh鈥檚 autopsy revealed she had ambiguous genitalia, which prompted many to demand that her awards be rescinded. In addition to telling her fascinating story, The Forgotten Legacy of Stella Walsh provides a close look at the early days of women鈥檚 track and field. This book also examines the complicated and controversial question of sex and gender identity in athletics鈥攁n issue very much in the news today. Featuring numerous photographs that help bring to life Walsh鈥檚 story and the times in which she lived, this biography will interest and inform historians of sport and women鈥檚 studies, as well as anyone who wants to learn more about a Polish immigrant who was once the fastest woman alive.

If you could ask for anything, knowing that you would get it, what would you ask for? If you knew that you had an equal chance of living another fifty years or anther fifty seconds, how would you live the rest your life?Stones:While on vacation, my son pointed out the unusual rock formations and asked why the land was sacred. I told him that when people see something rare, something unusual, they are reminded it could only have come from God. I believe that rare and unusual events in our lives are the very fingerprints of God.My sons and I were reading the stories about Joshua conquering the land of Canaan and about how Joshua set up an Ebenezer stone to remind him that God had helped him. I was explaining the concept and they decided that we need an Ebenezer stone so that we can remember how much God has helped us over this time and to remind us that we can trust Him and be brave in the future when we are scared. This book is our family鈥檚 Ebenezer, our sacred stone, God鈥檚 fingerprint on our lives. We hope that you enjoy reading it as much as I have enjoyed writing it.
